Remember that time when you didn't think you could do it? And you did it anyways? Yeah, me too. We've all been there. It can be as small as getting out of bed in the morning when you don't want to. We've all overcome the tendency we have to make ourselves feel weak, to sell ourselves short, and to cave to the nature of our limited self. The self in us that runs from the pain, avoids the uncomfortable, and tells us a story about why we should remove ourselves from these situations. It is the part of us that is constantly trying to rationalize all of our behavior and to keep us in a state of feeling good about everything we do, whether it be for "better" or "worse". You know what? It's time we tell that little fucker to rest.
Life is either expanding or contracting. It expands into the unknown, edging the boundary of what we can see and feel and 'know' and mark with our defining lines of comfort. It expands according to the level of discomfort we can handle, for the unknown and uncertain is very uncomfortable. Maybe it is only uncomfortable to that part of us that avoids it? Maybe that feeling of fulfillment that we get when we actually do the thing we thought that we couldn't, is the feeling of us connecting to the infinity beyond the boundaries of the comfortable and knowable life. We know what it's like to connect to infinity, because it provides greater joy than any of the ephemeral achievements that we experience when we actually get what we expect... and we are all doing this in varying degrees every day. The magnitude and intensity of this satisfaction is determined by how much we resist, and feel like we cannot do 'the thing'.
Every time we extend ourselves a little further than we expect, we experience something that is beyond expectation. Start noticing it in all the small ways that add up through a day. All of the times we notice ourselves wanting to take the easy road, and divert our energy towards that which is a little more challenging, but true and right. The trick is to build momentum in all of these ways, to notice that we are indeed capable of more than we expect and we do this in many seemingly trivial ways during our daily life. Yet it is not trivial. It is far from trivial.
Remember your greatness. Remember that each time you push the edge even in the tiniest of ways, and connect to that same place when you do the thing that requires more will. When the task to accomplish or the obstacle to overcome seems insurmountable, turn away from the impossibility of it and focus on the times you've made it possible. Be with the source of it all, especially during those trying times. As much as possible, keep in mind the nature of the infinite that springs forth from within you and spreads into all that you do. Celebrate the small wins and connect them to the big ones. Do a little bit more than you expect, finish what you start, and do it with a little bit more enthusiasm than you began with.
Remember that time we did the thing we thought we couldn't do? Yeah, we are capable of this same ability to overcome any of the mental limitations we can come up with. Remember our greatness.
