WHAT is Bridge the Gap Yoga (BTGY)?

The ancient technologies of Yoga have been used for thousands of years to maximize human potential. It is through the use of these technologies that we bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science to help you step into your true identity as a whole human being, empowered to live the life you are meant to live.

What do we do....?
To empower each individual to embody their fullest expression, the Bridge the Gap Yoga school uses practices, techniques and methods that have been time-tested and validated for their efficacy at maximizing human potential. We are after real human spiritual transformation. Embodied spiritual disciplines such as a principle-based yoga practice increases our sensitivity; vocal tools such as music, singing and chanting amplify the qualities of deep listening and human expression; ritual and ceremony boost our devotion; the deep silence of meditation refines our competency of inner stillness; and community comes together to connect us all and remind us of our authenticity and our humanity. All of these things blend together to create the BTGY system. This creates the proper environment for profound transformation to occur. We are determined to inspire people to do the ‘work’.
What is the 'work'...?
The work we do is centered around Presence, which is the merge of our perception with the immediate environment. This is a result of a nervous system that is tuned to the Here-Now moment. Everything we are doing at BTGY is designed to enhance the functioning of the nervous system. This system functions within the spectrum of two fundamental qualities: sensitivity and stillness. We can do practices to help us develop these spiritual competencies, and thus we can learn how to hold space for life while also being creatively engaged in it. This provides the space for inspiration to birth itself. This is how we digest the unresolved material of the past and as generate a new future for ourselves, instead of repeating our patterns and habits. We do this by refining our capacity to be Here-Now. We do this by cultivating Presence. In Presence, the light of our evolutionary self shines forth.
HOW...?

Based on the practicality of ancient wisdom sciences, the BTGY school has Four Pillars for its foundation. Successful efforts rely upon the proper progression of these qualities. The Four Pillars can be observed by noticing the key components behind any success in life. As we are each our own life scientist, we wish to refine our abilities in each category.

- Willingness: any effort begins with the willingness to change something.
- Knowing: once we are willing, we must investigate how we will change.
- Doing: once we know how, we must take action.
- Becoming: once we have taken action, we observe ourselves becoming.

This is a modern synthesis of the Four Paths of Yoga, as they are classically defined. These Paths (Margas) are known as Bhakti, Jnana, Karma, and Raja Yoga, and they each have specific associated practices that we explore at BTGY. You can read more about these paths here.
WHY?
We believe that each human being has an innate urge to maximize their potential in this lifetime. There is a need on the planet today to restore harmony between the various systems of our being. Each one of the Four Pillars and corresponding Margas is designed to develop these systems through refining specific aspects of the heart, mind, and body of the yogin. This development extends into the world around us. We wish to offer specific opportunities to explore these ancient sciences in order to restore the natural harmony between ourselves and our environment.
WHEN?

When shall we start on the path of transformation? The answer is NOW. There are various opportunities to get involved with us. Reach out if you need further guidance.
The Four Pillars of BTGY
WILLINGNESS Bhakti Yoga:

The first step on any path is the inspiration that comes from within a person's heart to make something different than what it is.
-
We view this willingness as one of the most precious qualities in any human being, and we see that it can be cultivated through principle-based Hatha Yoga practices and devotional music. We provide opportunities to practice Hatha Yoga in a way that cultivates body and breath intimacy, and we also have gatherings dedicated to singing devotional hymns and sacred songs. Sometimes we combine the two. Check the schedule to see where more willingness , or Bhakti, can be cultivated, or review the links above.

KNOWING Jnana Yoga:
We strive to offer adequate and appropriately sourced instruction to assist aspirants in developing their jnana (pronounced "gyana"), or knowledge.
-
As an educational platform and yoga school, we provide resources on various subjects connected to yoga, consciousness, science, and spirituality. Get started in the knowledge base, the online platform, or read the blog here if you wish to whet the mental appetite, to learn about HOW. Hint: The HOW is more important than the WHAT.

DOING Karma Yoga:
A key aspect of the quest for human fulfillment is taking action.
-
We will be volunteering at an orphanage in Uganda, Africa in August of 2020. This is our big yearly service project, and we will be raising money for this throughout the year through a variety of events, such as Kirtans and other Yoga classes. The fundraising link for this can be found here. (As of April 2020, due to the global pandemic, we've put a hold on this particular project. We appreciate all of you for your donations and are waiting for the proper direction in which to funnel the capital. Stay tuned for that)

BECOMING Raja Yoga:
In the process of being willing to change something, knowing what to do and how to do it, and then taking action and actually doing it... we end up becoming the very thing we were initially inspired by.
-
The BECOMING aspect of the path is encompassed in many of the applied yoga practices, such as physical postures, breathing exercises and meditation, which all promote actual changes to our neurophysiology. We make the applied yogic sciences more available in our Hatha Yoga programs, which help develop the entire mind-body system to prepare it for real human spiritual transformation. We are not currently offering any drop-in Hatha Yoga classes at our home studio, our focus is on running our Yoga Deepening programs. We have a Level 1 and Level 2 program in session which will be complete at the end of May.
Our next Yoga Deepening module begins June 1st - enrollment is open for this. Please e-mail us with interest. We have a retreat coming up May 22-25 for those who've completed our programs and feel comfortable with their home Hatha Yoga sadhana.
